walking through cities
I have a thing for slippers -`♡´-
Elegant slippers, of the cute kind.
You might know that already ♡
Its the softness, the comfort, the beauty.
But first lets rewind ꩜
In February I visited my good friend Victoria in Singapore. We’ve seen a lot of life together, think high hair, a ton of hairspray, interesting boyfriends, to tight tube skirts with splash of a buckle boot.
Earlier this year I was lucky enough to stay with her family for 5 days. Singapore is gorgeous and hot, humid like I’d forgotten. Humidity aside, walking through the streets of Singapore is a delight. On my first day while Victoria was working, I took my camera and walked the streets. As you walk the streets you can walk under the shelter of the Shop Houses. They are designed to keep you out of the sun, so clever.
Do you agree, that strolling through cities lets you see so much you don’t get in an Uber or Taxi as you whizz by? Are you a city stroller &/or walker too? Maybe one day I’ll do a post on good walking shoes haha.
First day, first walk, my first accidental stop was China Town. In the window of a cute little jewellery store tucked back from the street, I spied the cutest little sets of Singapore Slippers ١٥٧٤♡ picture below.
I love a background story, and the sales lady didn’t disappoint. She told me that these miniature slippers are handmade by Singaporean Great Grandma, whose family heritage is a mix Chinese and Malaysian. She only makes these slippers for the jewellery store I visited, they are her hobby.
She had made the tiny slippers in blue, green and orange….. (I know, no pink). So I purchased the yellow ones above. They are tiny and adorable and very photographable and they bring me joy.
As well as Singapore slippers…
I fell in love with the Peranakan Shop Houses … below. Victoria blocked out a day and took me to see Peranakan Street. She knows me well. We walked the street and she patiently waited for me as I clicked away with my camera.
The design of the houses is so intricate, so beautiful, a mixture of Malay and Chinese heritage with Dutch roots. I read that the belief was that this design brought blessings and good luck. Looking at them and soaking them in, brought me a lot of joy and happiness, maybe those feelings are an intentional effect of the design. Who knows! But I did feel blessed to see & photograph them. Can you guess which one is my favourite? Which one do you love?
We did so much walking in Singapore.
When you visit a city do you walk? Maybe your a morning runner? How do you see a city?
Sidenote: Have you read the book Flaneuse by Lauren Elkin? Its about women walking the streets of Paris, New York, Tokyo, Venice and London. Its a great read about walking cities and how much you discover out on a good walk.
From the Shop Houses,
to Haji Lane Singapore
was full of surprises.
The best part, sitting up late with Victoria sipping red wine reminiscing & laughing about the good old days.
Friendship is gold. But lets not forget to make new memories with our friends. Life is flying by so fast. So far 56 feels fun. You?
