flower philosophy

How many varieties of flowers are there? I’m pretty sure there’s an equal amount of ways to sprinkle a little magic on your life. BUT rather than preaching I thought I’d do a little blog offering of ways that I love to infuse my life with flowers. A philosophy or contemplation of sorts.

The earth laughs in flowers. Emerson

We have so many ways to invite flowers into our lives. And honestly, why wouldn’t we want to infuse our life with them? Traditionally when we think about flowers its about giving and receiving, sometimes for ourselves. Lets get creative and think about the many ways we can infuse our life with the beauty of these magical parts of nature:

  • Think about Perfume Oils - there are so many varieties. You can float through your day on the scent of jasmine, rose, and/or gardenia. Etsy has so many reasonably priced perfume oils and so does the Attar Man from Ylang Ylang, Geranium to Apple Spice and my recent favourite: Holy Pushkar. The Attar Man is often at Glebe Markets and online. When you apply the oil, say to yourself “I’m wearing Jasmine Oil” adapt as needed, but cast a small spell of loveliness by saying or whispering the actual scent.

  • Clothes, PJ’s, Scarves; do any of the things you wear remind you of flowers? Do you love block printed flowers? Currently my pink PJ’s have flowers on them. If you go to the Friday Beaches Farmers Market in Warriewood there are cute stalls with dresses & skirts, for a bit of luxe look at Hannah Art or my favourite store Loveduck Paddington. Splash some attention on your wardrobe by looking the the prints, colours and fabrics that you wear. What are you loving right now?

  • On your walks find a spot of jasmine, bougainvillaea or some frangipani. Gift yourself a moment to smell or visually appreciate that pop of colour and the perfume of these flowers. If the earth does laugh in flowers, what can you laugh at in your life right now? What's funny? Anything making you laugh or smile right now?

  • Lately, sipping flowers for breakfast: I start the day with tea, and recently I found a morning rose tea by The Tea Collective called Love Potion, a delicate gathering of rose, vanilla pieces and rich black tea. Perfect morning pick me up that looks and tastes divine (I have mine with a good dash of skim milk). Its a fun way to think about the start to my day, sipping flowers for breakfast.

  • Read poetry about flowers - think Bloom for Yourself by April Green, anything by Mary Oliver and The Moonflower Monologues by Tess Guinery.

  • Friday Flower Movement: A yogi I loved wrote about Friday being the ‘movement of flowers’ day. She envisaged on this one day, zooming out & looking at the earth as women literally move flowers from one woman to another. Can you close your eyes and imagine flowers moving around the earth, from one person to another, a bouquet in a home, the painting of flowers being gifted, photos of flowers moving about. Who could you give a flower to this Friday? The receptionist at your work, your barista, the next door neighbour.

How can flowers become part of your way of being in the world? Notice how a dab of rose oil soothes your heart, or how you smile when you see a pop of bougainvillaea. Its not a religion (but it could be!) this way of seeing life, but an immersion in the deep beauty of flowers and how they can infuse many layers of our lives.

This has been such fun to write. Honestly, its been a minute since I was here writing posts. And it feels so good. Thank you for reading to the end, I hope you can take some of the above and infuse your life with flowers in which form you choose.

May your week be blessed with showers of flowers.

xx
